Customer Health Score (CHS) Explained

A Customer Health Score (CHS) is a composite metric that tells a business how likely a customer is to renew, expand, or churn. Instead of relying on gut feeling, customer success teams combine data points like product usage frequency, feature adoption, support ticket volume, NPS responses, and payment history into a single, trackable score.

Typically scored on a scale (like 0–100 or red/yellow/green), CHS gives teams an early warning system. A customer with declining login activity and rising support complaints might show as “red,” prompting a proactive check-in before they consider cancelling. Conversely, a “green” account signals a strong candidate for upsells or case studies.

Building an effective CHS model requires choosing the right weighted inputs — not every metric matters equally for every business. A SaaS company might weight feature adoption heavily, while an e-commerce loyalty platform might prioritize repeat purchase frequency.

The real value of CHS lies in turning reactive customer support into proactive customer success. When health scores are integrated with CRM and automation tools, teams can trigger timely outreach, personalized content, or in-app nudges — reducing churn and improving lifetime value in a measurable, repeatable way
