WhatsApp Quality Rating Explained: What It Is and How to Protect It

If you send business messages on WhatsApp, there is one number-less score quietly deciding how far your campaigns can go: your quality rating. Most teams only notice it when something breaks, a template gets paused, or a sending limit refuses to grow. Let’s make it simple so you can stay ahead of it.

What is the WhatsApp quality rating?

The quality rating is Meta’s way of measuring how people feel about the messages your business number sends. It appears in WhatsApp Manager and shows up as High (green), Medium (yellow) or Low (red). Think of it as a reputation score for your phone number, built from real reactions: do customers read and reply, or do they block and report you?

The rating mostly reflects recent feedback, roughly the last week, so it moves. A good campaign can lift it; one careless broadcast can drag it down fast.

Why it matters for your business

Quality rating is tied directly to growth. Your messaging limit, the number of unique customers you can start conversations with in a rolling 24 hours, grows in steps as you keep a healthy rating and send to more people. New or unverified accounts start small, and higher tiers (1,000, 10,000, 100,000 and eventually unlimited) open up as your volume and quality prove you are a trusted sender.

A Low rating can freeze that growth. In more serious cases, your number may be flagged and your templates can be limited or paused. For a business that depends on WhatsApp for order updates, reminders or sales follow-ups, that is lost revenue, not just a technical headache.

What drives the rating up or down?

Meta doesn’t publish an exact formula, but the main signals are easy to understand:

  • Blocks and reports. These are the strongest negative signals. Every time someone blocks you or reports your message as spam, your score suffers.
  • Opt-in quality. People who clearly agreed to hear from you rarely block you. People who never expected the message often do.
  • Message relevance. Generic blasts that ignore the customer’s history feel like spam, even if they technically followed the rules.
  • Frequency. Sending too often, especially promotional content, wears people out.
  • Template quality. Each template has its own quality status, and a poorly received template can be paused independently.

How to improve and protect your quality rating

  1. Collect clean opt-ins. Ask for permission at checkout, on forms or in a first conversation, and say clearly what you will send. A customer who expects your messages is far less likely to report them.
  2. Segment before you send. Don’t send one message to your whole list. Group people by purchase history, location or interest, so each message feels relevant.
  3. Make opting out easy. It sounds backwards, but a visible “reply STOP” option protects you. A polite unsubscribe is much better than a block or report.
  4. Control frequency. Set a sensible weekly cap per customer. If someone hasn’t engaged in months, rest them rather than keep pushing.
  5. Write human templates. Use the customer’s name, mention what they actually did, and keep the tone conversational. Avoid shouting, excessive emojis and vague promises.
  6. Respond quickly. If customers reply and nobody answers, they get frustrated. Fast, helpful replies create positive signals and better engagement.
  7. Monitor weekly. Check your rating and template statuses in WhatsApp Manager. If you see a dip, pause bulk sends and review your last campaigns before sending more.

What to do if your rating drops

Don’t panic and don’t keep sending. First, stop large promotional broadcasts. Then look at the campaigns from the past week: which audience, which template, which time of day? Remove people who haven’t engaged, tighten your targeting and send only high-value, expected messages such as order updates or appointment reminders while you recover. Ratings can bounce back when feedback improves.

Quality is a growth strategy

It’s tempting to treat the quality rating as a compliance chore. In reality, it’s a feedback loop that rewards businesses who respect their customers. Brands with consistently strong ratings reach higher limits, run bigger campaigns and enjoy better open and response rates, because their messages are wanted.
