Search Impression Share Explained

Search Impression Share is a Google Ads metric showing the percentage of times your ad was actually shown out of the total number of times it was eligible to appear for a given search term. It’s calculated as impressions received divided by estimated eligible impressions, expressed as a percentage.

A low impression share reveals missed opportunities — and Google Ads breaks down exactly why. “Lost Impression Share (Budget)” means your campaign ran out of budget before capturing all eligible impressions. “Lost Impression Share (Rank)” means your ad quality or bid wasn’t competitive enough to win the auction, even when budget was available.

Tracking impression share matters because a campaign showing strong click-through rates could still be underperforming its full potential — a 40% impression share means 60% of eligible searches never saw your ad at all. For branded search terms especially, low impression share can indicate competitors are actively bidding on your brand name.

Advertisers use this metric to prioritize where to invest next: increasing budget when it’s the limiting factor, or improving Quality Score and bids when rank is the bottleneck. Impression share, paired with conversion data, helps teams decide whether growth should come from bidding smarter or spending more.
