Then launch day arrives, thousands of customers need an alert at once, and your logs fill up with errors. Welcome to rate limits. Understanding them early saves you from failed deliveries, angry customers and emergency fixes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is an SMS API rate limit?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A rate limit is a cap on how many requests or messages you can send in a given period. It protects the provider\u2019s platform, keeps traffic fair across customers and, importantly, protects the mobile networks that carry your messages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are usually several layers, and they\u2019re easy to confuse:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>API request limits.<\/strong> How many calls per second or minute you can make to the provider\u2019s API. Exceed it and you\u2019ll typically receive an HTTP 429 \u201ctoo many requests\u201d response.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Throughput (messages per second).<\/strong> How fast your account, sender ID or number can push messages to carriers. A long code might handle around one message per second, while short codes and registered routes can handle far more.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Daily or monthly caps.<\/strong> Some accounts or sender types have volume ceilings, especially when new or unverified.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Carrier and regulatory limits.<\/strong> Mobile operators and regulators set their own rules. In the US, for example, registered 10DLC campaigns get throughput based on their trust score. In India, messages must travel through DLT-registered sender IDs and templates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The key point: your real limit is the lowest of all these layers, not the highest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why limits exist<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Without them, one misconfigured script could flood networks, trigger spam filters and damage deliverability for everyone. Limits also push senders towards good practice, such as registering use cases and warming up volume gradually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What happens when you hit a limit?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Depending on the provider, you may see:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>HTTP 429 responses with a hint about when to retry<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Messages accepted but queued, so delivery is delayed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Messages rejected with a specific error code<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Throttled delivery that stretches a campaign over hours<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A delayed OTP is nearly as bad as a failed one, so you want to design for this, not discover it in production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to work with rate limits<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1. Read the documentation first.<\/strong> Find out the request limit, the throughput per sender and any caps for your account type. Ask your provider how limits change as you grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2. Use a queue.<\/strong> Don\u2019t fire thousands of API calls from your application at once. Put messages in a queue and let workers release them at a controlled pace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3. Implement retries with exponential backoff.<\/strong> When you receive a 429 or a temporary error, wait a short time, retry, then wait longer on each attempt. Add a little random jitter so many workers don\u2019t retry at the same instant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>4. Prioritise traffic.<\/strong> Separate urgent messages (OTPs, security alerts) from bulk marketing. Give critical traffic its own queue or sender so a big promotion never delays a login code.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>5. Batch where possible.<\/strong> Many APIs let you send multiple recipients in one request, which reduces call volume and keeps you inside request limits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>6. Use webhooks, not polling.<\/strong> Constantly asking \u201chas this been delivered?\u201d wastes your quota. Let delivery receipts come to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>7. Make requests idempotent.<\/strong> If a retry could send the same message twice, customers get duplicates. Use unique message references so repeats are ignored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>8. Monitor and alert.<\/strong> Track send rate, error rate and queue depth. Set alerts for spikes in 429s so you can react before customers notice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Planning for a big campaign<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re about to message a large audience, work backwards. Take your list size and divide by your throughput to see how long the send will actually take. A hundred thousand messages at fifty per second takes about 33 minutes; at five per second it takes over five hours. If the timing matters, such as a flash sale ending tonight, you may need higher throughput, more sender IDs or a staggered plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Talk to your provider before launch. Throughput upgrades, dedicated routes and warm-up schedules are usually easier to arrange in advance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Common mistakes<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sending OTPs and promotions on the same route<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Retrying instantly in a tight loop, which makes throttling worse<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ignoring carrier-level rules and then blaming the API<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Never load-testing before a major launch<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Forgetting that sending to invalid numbers still counts against your usage<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The takeaway<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rate limits aren\u2019t an obstacle; they\u2019re a design requirement.
